Experienced Professionals
The SBS team has the right skills, knowledge, and time to properly meet the needs of our advisory service clients. SBS has full-time, non-commissioned employees in three locations throughout New York State who are licensed by the New York State Insurance Department and the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA). Our seasoned professionals, each of whom has more than ten years of industry experience, implement your investment program, provide ongoing review and consultation, and ensure compliance with securities regulations.

James J. Kelley, PRP, President, HANYS Benefit Services. B.A., Gettysburg College, Gettysburg, PA. Jim directs all the activities and services of HBS, and HCSC. Jim has over 17 years experience in the institutional retirement market. Prior to joining HBS, he served as Vice President, Institutional Relations for The Hartford. Jim has spent much of his career working with healthcare and other not-for-profit organizations. He holds Series 6 and 63 licenses and is an accredited Plan Sponsor Retirement Professional.

John W. Jezsu, Vice President, HANYS Benefit Services. John brings more than 30 years of experience in the retirement planning and insurance business. John’s background and knowledge extend to the design, development, and implementation of a variety of qualified and non-qualified retirement plans including defined benefit pension, 401(a), 401(k), 403(b), and 457(b), with a particular expertise working with health care employers and individual health care professionals. Prior to joining HBS, he served as Vice President of Sedgwick Noble Lowndes in Rochester for 13 years. John earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of Connecticut, and holds Series 6, 63 and 26 licenses.
William H. Desormeau, Jr., CFP® - Director of Retirement and Investment Services
William has twelve years experience providing investment and financial advisory services. Before joining HANYS Benefit Services, William held Financial Advisor and Retirement Planning Consultant positions at UBS PaineWebber and served as Retirement Plan Administrator and Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Desormeau Vending Corporation. William’s securities and insurance credentials include being a Registered Series 7, 63, and 65 Representative with the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority (FINRA); and holding New York State Life Insurance and Variable Annuities, Accident, and Health Insurance licensure. He has earned the designation of Certified Financial Planner™ from the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc., and is certified to sell and market Long Term Care Insurance under the New York State Partnership for Long Term Care Insurance. William was awarded the 2006 Financial Frontiers Award by The Journal of Financial Planning and JANUSINTECH, as co-author of Optimal Rebalancing Frequency for Bond-Stock Portfolios. William is a director of the Center for Institutional Investment Management at the State University of New York at Albany. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Syracuse University, his Master’s degree in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Albany, and is a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma National Honor Society for Business.
Karen Kaufman-White, Research Associate, Retirement Services.
Karen has 12 years of experience on Wall Street as an Equity Trader, worked as a Trust Administrator in a local bank, and as a paralegal for a prominent Albany law firm. In the healthcare field, Karen was a Planning/Marketing Specialist in an area hospital and worked briefly as an analyst for HANYS Quality and Research Initiatives before joining HBS. She earned her B.A. from Boston University and her M.B.A. from the College of St. Rose. Karen’s responsibilities include monitoring investment managers via data collection, research, evaluation, and modeling, and providing review and analysis of the investment securities.
